Requirements
Senior Software Engineer, Optimizer
This company is a venture-backed edtech company that uses optimization software, plus expert support, to help school districts build their timetables. It is growing quickly with strong renewals, has several years of runway, and has a team of around 60, many from education, with a culture of mentorship.
This engineer joins a small optimization team (three engineers and a tech lead, reporting into the CTO) and turns real school constraints into models that produce better schedules, then ships them as production code.
What you’ll do
• Design and own the optimization algorithms that build school schedules.
• Turn scheduling problems into mathematical models and production code using solvers such as Gurobi or OR-Tools CP-SAT.
• Build the back-end around the optimizer: APIs, background jobs and AWS infrastructure.
• Do some front-end work (about 20%) to show results to users.
• Lead complex projects and work closely with non-technical colleagues.
Must have
• 4–10 years as a software engineer with deep optimization or ML/algorithm expertise.
• Has built linear optimization or ML models and turned the math into working software.
• Experience with solvers, or a strong optimization foundation and the ability to learn them fast.
• Strong back-end skills and still coding at least half the time.
• Python (preferred); comfortable leading projects and working with stakeholders.
• Able to overlap early mornings with colleagues in Europe and India.
• Degree in computer science or another technical field.
Nice to have
• Optimization-heavy domains (ride-hailing, e-commerce, logistics).
• General ML background; AWS; math or EE degree.
Interview process
• Algorithm-focused take-home exercise.
• Technical interviews on the solution and on system design.
• Final conversations.
Base: $160,000 – $200,000 + equity, with a flexible cash/equity mix
Location: remote (US-based); East Coast preferred
Benefits: health, dental, vision and life insurance; unlimited PTO; learning budget
